BEFORE...
what we did...
-
Designed a multi-level entertaining space including an open terrace, an undercover kitchen area, and a south-facing dining spot
-
Repurposed the existing Yorkstone to create terraces, pathways, and a formal rose garden that leads guests through the space
-
Transformed an awkward area near the kitchen into a visual focal point, using formal hedging, Italian Cypress, and pleached trees to add privacy and interest
-
Integrated a chicken area, hidden from the main garden with structured planting
-
Retained the existing orchard and mature trees, making them part of the overall structure and flow
-
Balanced the transition between old and new materials for a seamless, cohesive finish

client experience
“We had tried others, but Ian was the one that listened to the brief properly, and came back with very clear and detailed designs on a fairly large project.”
The clients had explored other design options before working with me, but none felt quite right. What made the difference was the clarity, the level of detail, and the way I translated a long wishlist into a design that now flows beautifully from one end of the garden to the other.

It’s a space that works hard: calm when it needs to be, sociable when it counts, and always grounded in the way the family actually lives.

If you’re not quite ready to reach out, but want to stay in the loop, I send occasional insights, insights from the design process, and a look at what’s growing in gardens and on the drawing board, that might just help you move forward.
No spam, no filler, just thoughtful updates when there’s something worth sharing.

A modern family garden for all seasons
This large family garden had good bones, mature trees, a generous plot, and characterful old Yorkstone paving. But the layout was awkward, the garden was exposed, and the space didn’t invite use.
The brief was ambitious but thoughtful: a garden that could entertain, adapt, and grow with the family. Space for chickens. A rose garden. A large lawn. Multiple zones for relaxing and eating outdoors, all while making use of the existing materials and trees.
And above all, it needed to feel private and intentional.
