what we did...

  • Reshaped the slope to create a natural pond with informal cascades and soft movement

  • Preserved the original well and reimagined it as a quiet focal point, visible from the house and terrace

  • Introduced large rocks, Japanese acers, and a blend of evergreens to bring structure, softness and seasonal interest

  • Embedded Japanese-inspired design principles into the layout, simple, natural, meditative

  • Designed the planting to encourage wildlife while keeping maintenance light and thoughtful

What began as an overgrown border is now a quietly compelling part of the garden, one that blends naturalism with gentle structure, and adds a fresh sense of presence to a well-loved estate.

A wild tangle transformed into a naturalistic

feature with lasting presence

This project formed part of a long-term collaboration with the clients on their large country estate in Caunton, Newark. Over the years, I’d designed a number of key features across the garden, from formal cascades to woodland follies, but this particular area had become tired, tangled, and disconnected from the rest of the landscape.

The border, once vibrant, had lost all sense of structure and was overrun with bindweed. The existing well, once a feature in its own right, sat unnoticed and underused. The clients wanted to reclaim the space, but gently. The goal was to honour its original character while introducing something new, with a clear connection to nature and a deeper sense of calm.
